Fauna
Due to very rich wildlife diversity, Tortuguero is a great experience even when it isn't turtle nesting season. 57 species of amphibians, 111 species of reptiles, 309 species of recorded birds, 30 species of fresh water fish, including the Gar (considered to be a living fossil) and 60 species of mammals can be found there. 
If you ride with a boat through the wonderful canals of Tortuguero you will easily explore the rainforest with its rich fauna and flora. A guide can show you various tropical animals and with some luck you will be able to observe monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, sloths, pelicans, toucans etc. Furthermore exist animals like the danta, jaguar, congos, pizotes, raccoons, fishing bats, poison frogs and many more.
Flora
Tortuguero is the area with the greatest biological variety in Costa Rica. 11 habitats have been identified and there are 2000 species of plants and 400 species of trees.
