Boat trips
A boat trip on the canals of Tortuguero can be a unique experience since you will have the opportunity to observe a lot of exotic animals. Guided tours are recommended since the guides are used to spot the animals and will give you more information about the different species.

Turtle nesting walks
During the turtle-nesting season, you can watch the turtles laying their eggs on the beach of Tortuguero. The walk takes place during the night and you are obliged to be accompanied by a guide so you don't disturb the process. The turtle-nesting season is June to October.

Watching baby turtles hatch
The babies hatch about two months after the eggs have been laid. The turtles dig their selves out of the sand and have to find their way to the sea. This is a riskful journey and many babies end up as alimentation for crabs, birds and fishes. The hatching takes place in the late afternoon or during the night. The season for hatching is August to December.

Fishing in the canals or in the sea
On the Caribbean side, Costa Rica offers excellent Tarpon and Snook fishing. Along the coast north of the port of Limon, there is a 100-mile network of rivers, canals and lagoons that jointly make up one of the best Tarpon fishing areas.

Kayaking and canoeing
Kayaks and canoes can be rent in most of the hotels or in the village and you can then explore the many waterways of Tortuguero on your own.
